WelcomeOnlineChatboxRandom AlbumsSupport thisisSaltash | Welcome to thisisSaltash Saltash's very own community website. We hope this website will become a focal point for Saltash on the World Wide Web, whatever your connection we want you to join us here, maybe you have distant links to Saltash? It doesn’t matter come and join us. If you are having an event you can post it on to the calendar, you can post whatever you want from a tea party to who knows a car boot sale, a school reunion, or your clubs monthly meeting down the local pub. We want this to be as much about the people of Saltash as possible and there is only one way to achieve that and that is for you to get involved in some way. One section, we would very much like to encourage people to help out on, is the History section. We want to be able to show written accounts from people who's great grandmothers and fathers lived in Saltash. Taking the Saltash heritage trail you can get a image of the days gone by, like Old Mr Elliot’s shop, and Mary Newman’s Cottage, but if you look harder you will be able to find many old relics still there, such as the gate pillars for the Port View estate. There is far more to be found than most people realise you just need to open your eyes. Have you ever wandered up Fore Street and noticed a green dragon? No, go and have a look, its on the Co-op building, the site of the Green Dragon Inn. Wander along the waterside and experience some magnificent views up and down the Tamar, and take in some beautiful public houses such as the Union Inn and The Boatman or a wander up Station Hill takes you past the Two Bridges, a public house situated almost directly under the Royal Albert Bridge. The Town boasts some very famous former associations such as Ann Glanville, Henry Jackson and not forgetting Isambard Kingdom Brunel who built and designed the Royal Albert Bridge that connected Devon and Cornwall across the river Tamar, becoming the “Gateway to Cornwall” Latest Forum Posts
Friday 22 May 2009 Petition to not increase the Tamar Bridge Toll The Tamar Bridge Joint Authority in Devon wishes to increase the Toll charged to cross the River Tamar by 50% in December 2009. This is outragous in the worst recession since the 1930's the people of Devon and Cornwall are indeed the lowest paid in the UK and cannot afford this increase. The Tamar Bridge is reported to be making a profit and has a surplus of almost £2million even though the amount of crossings is falling year on year yet they still make large sums of money. Anyone who shops at Waitrose, Saltash might be aware of the Community Matters Scheme – you know, the one where you put the little green tokens into one of three ‘bins’ depending on which local group you wish to support. In June, the Tamar Protection Society are one of the lucky contestants in the Scheme and we need all of the green tokens that we can get. As I mentioned below the shop windows at Elliott’s Store were replaced some years ago but are now in poor condition and a small way in which anyone can help us to raise the neccessary funds to replace them would be to put your little green Waitrose token into our bin. However we appreciate that there are probably two other very well deserving causes alongside us, but I hope that you might be able to tell friends, relatives etc to think back to how Elliott’s Store looked in the 1980’s when it was boarded up (sadly, there is a real possibility right now that this might happen again), or pass this email around to others who might be able to help. Alternatively, why not bring the family and friends to visit the Store, which is open on Saturday 10.00-12.00 and Wednesday afternoons 2.00-4.00, or Mary Newman’s Cottage (Weds/Thurs/Sat/Sun 12.00-4.00) as all monies through visitor attendance are much needed. We very much appreciate your help.
